As always, with each new month, comes a new charity that we at Kendra Phillip feel strongly about. This month we have chosen to give a portion of our proceeds to Art Start. Art Start is a local New York City foundation dedicated to saving at-risk youth from a life they don’t deserve.
What is Art Start?
It all started in the spring of 1991 when a group of artists got together with homeless and at-risk youth in New York City to make art. Over the past 25 years, Art Start has become an award-winning and nationally recognized program for using art to change lives. Unlike a lot of similar programs, Art Start goes directly to homeless shelters, to provide art workshops and programs to the people who need them most. They inspire young people to be creative, be unique and face obstacles head on. By participating in Art Start programs, the at-risk youth learn to make meaningful contributions to their community and build confidence and hope in their own lives. This encourages personal growth and development and adds consistency to their lives.
Why Art Start?
We chose Art Start for the charity of the month because this is a program that sets the bar high and helps others envision and change their futures. Rather than being incarcerated or punished for their behavior, this is a chance to do something different, to find a better life. Many New York City at-risk teens have never seen beyond Queens or the Bronx. They have never believed or been told that they can have dreams of their own. Art Start gives them an opportunity to make a difference. Although the program is art-centric, this does not mean the ultimate goal is a career in art. Of course, many teens are interested in visual art, music, fine art, literature and film, but plenty more use this as an eye opening experience. They come away from the program with a different perspective of themselves and our world. They start to believe in themselves and in turn begin to work towards a larger and more concrete goal.
To learn more about Art Start or to find out how you can get involved, please visit their website or attend a Kendra Phillip trunk show. A portion of all trunk show proceeds this month will be donated to help Art Start save lives in New York City.
